Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary an ideal destination to watch herds of wild elephants. These Sanctuary is located at the area about 16 km east of Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad district, north Kerala. Muthanga is contiguous with the protected area network of the Nagarhole National Park and the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in the neighbouring State of Karnataka and Mudumalai of Tamilnadu. It is one of the best wildlife sanctuaries of north Kerala.The Park covers an area of about 345 sq km. The wide variety of flora and fauna including some rare and comes under Project Elephant. The major wildlife attractions in Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary includes elephants roam freely here and tigers are sighted occasionally. Some of the common species that are spotted are different types of deer, monkeys, birds etc also live here. The flora here chiefly consists of wide variety of trees including Sal, Teak and Bamboo along with major plants such as Semal, Mahua, Harra, Ber and Tendu. The trees and plants in the sanctuary are typical of the south Indian moist deciduous forests and west coast semi evergreen forests. Apart from the drive along the road to Muthanga and further, offers chances to watch these roaming animals. Elephant rides are arranged by the Forest Department. The best season to visit here from June to October.
