Rameshwaram is one of the major holiest places in Tamil Nadu region in southern India. It is one of the most renowned pilgrim in the region is a small island in the Gulf of Mannar and a peninsula. It is situated on a beautiful island in the lower side of India and is separated by a small Pamban channel from Sri Lanka. Rameswaram is known for its 22 theerthas or wells in and around the main temple. This place is equally sacred to both Vaishnavites and Shaivites. Rameswaram is a holy place for the Hindus because Sri Rama, on his return from Sri Lanka, offered his thanks to Lord Shiva and performed pooja to wash away his sin in killing the Demon King, Ravana. It has one of the famous Jyotirlings in the place which one would like to worship as a part of Hindu culture.


 It is a holy place to perform several rituals and people from all across the globe come at this particular place to worship Lord Rama and offer sacred prayers to the holy deity. Every year several people visit the place with holy intentions of offering sacred prayers to Lord Rama and the statues of the lord are made with great artistic essence. According to the Hindu mythology, it is located at the area about 197 metres long to Sri Lanka is connected to the mainland by road and railway bridges across the sea. If one visits Rameswaram and prays to Lord Shiva one will be relieved of one’s sins. Lord Shiva too is worshipped in this place. It is regarded as a place where Ravana was killed and hence it has a great historical foundation is also known as Varanasi of southern India.Besides pilgrimage, Rameswaram Island has several places, which are ideal picnic spots.


 The Ramanathaswamy temple is renowned for its magnificent corridors and massive sculptured pillars. The third corridor of Ramanathaswamy temple is the longest one in the world. The place has several wonderful temples, which are a great master piece of creativity. Rameswaram is a main fishing centre of Tamil Nadu is also famous for its dry fish. Variety of fishes including export quality fish like prawns, sea cucumber and lobster are available here. There are beautiful beaches at Olaikuda, Dhanushkodi and Pamban. The Olaikuda beach is located at the area about 1 km from the main temple and s engulfed by coral reefs, which makes bathing in the sea safe and enjoyable. Rameswaram Island during winter the major attractions that the variety of migrated birds are found flamingos and sea gulls as well as diving glasses and respiration tubes, scuba diving is safe and possible. The best Time to Visit is from October to April.
